These works are created using an exceptional process: the natural sediment of whetstone and steel—left behind during traditional blade sharpening—is pressed onto paper to form intricate, unrepeatable patterns. No two pieces can ever be recreated, making every set a singular expression of artistry and craftsmanship.

Rice paper preserves the whetstone patterns because it absorbs far less than aquarelle paper. Its shallow, delicate fibers let the water and sediment sit on the surface, keeping the original greys, blacks, swirls, and shapes intact—without pulling or altering the random pattern. Aquarelle paper absorbs more and subtly distorts the design, while rice paper captures it as it truly appears.
